Since 2008, the top 9 teams get automatic berths, while the rest have a chance to play in the Olympics only if they pass through qualification processes in regional competitions under the supervision of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the world governing body for the sport.

One further innovation the IIHF has introduced is to allow professional players to play in the Olympics since 1988.
