Where It All Started

Four cities vied for the host city post for the XXI Winter Olympics in 2010 namely, Bern, Switzerland; Pyeonghchang, South Korea; Salzburg, Austria; and Vancouver, Canada, in the drawing of lots held on August 28, 2002.

But the city of Bern withdrew its candidature on September 27, 2008, leaving the three remaining cities to submit their candidacy files to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in January of 2003. And in July 2, 2003, the full membership of IOC announced their decision to grant the hosting of the 2010 Winter Olympics to Vancouver, Canada, based on technical assessment criteria and a strict assessment of the city’s ability to stage and organize a top-level Olympic Winter Games.

Let the Games Begin

Following the tradition of the Olympic games, Sam Sullivan, then-mayor of Vancouver, received the Olympic flag at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics that was held in Torino, Italy. Raised in February 28, 2006, the flag remains on display at the Vancouver City Hall and will remain there until the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony.
